Maraqeh City

Maraqeh is one of the old and historical cities of Azerbaijan and Iran. Ptolemy named Urmia Lake “Margianeh” because of its position in the west part of Maraqeh. Mark Antony in 36BC has named this place Faraeta while describing the Parthia dynasty events.
During Harun al-Rashid governing the income of Maraqeh has belonged to king’s daughters. This city was also the shelter of Arabs during Arabs war against Babak Khoramdin in Arasbaran. Even Afshin take this district center of its army in winter.
In 280 AH, Mohammad Ibn Afshin Ibn Div was Maraqeh ruler. Then his brother, Yusuf take his position and make a coin with his own name in 296 AH. In Yusuf dynasty, Maraqeh has flourished a lot a Daralamare and a treasury and some other structures were built. He became a successful ruler little by little. The king approved his abilities then he takes Ardabil as his ruling center.
In 420 AH, Oghuz Turks enter Maraqeh. In 566 Ah Maraqeh was Seljuq’s territory. In 622 AH Jalalodin Kharazmshah entered Maraqeh without any resistance.
In 628 AH, this city was caught by Mongol Army. In 656 AH, Maraqeh was Hulagu Khan’s governing center. Nasir al-Din al-Tusi and some other astronomers built the famous Maraqeh Observatory. Hulagu Khan was Buddha but his wife and mother were Christian so Maraqeh and its surrounding have become the center of Christianity. Romian, Armenian and Nestorian, scientists and artists had gathered in Maraqeh. During Ghazan dynasty churches had been changed to mosques and preachers lose their position in Azerbaijan’s big cities.
In 712 AH, Shamsodin Qare Sanqoz who was the prince of Egypt run to Iran and Soltan Mohammad Khodabande Oljayto shelter him and he charged him as Maraqeh’s ruler.
In 759 AH, Maraqe was destroyed by Teimourian. During Shah Ismail conquered so many people from different cities had been killed which Maraqeh was also among them. During Shah Tahmasb Safavi dynasty, schools, mosques, and public buildings were built and make this city and the cities around it, like Bonab, as one of the flourished and prosperous. During the continual war between Iran and Ottoman Empire, Abdulaziz Pasha ruled Maraqeh for short time. In 1142 AH, Maraqeh was conquered by Nader Shah. From Abas Mirza dynasty cities around Maraqeh were ruled by Ahmad Khan Moqadam Maraqi and his family. Although Sheikh Abidolah Kord tried to attack Maraqeh in 1297 AH, his attempts were defeated and peace returned to Maraqeh once again.
Samad Khan Shojaodole Maraqei was from Moqadam Dynasty. He was such a mean and cruel man which the history of the Persian Constitutional Revolution is full of his cruel deeds.

Mardaq (Mordichay) River in Azerbaijan

Mardaq River is originated from the southern mountains. It runs from east to southwest of Maraqeh, watering Gavdel lands then join Urmia Lake. This river belongs to the third period of geology. So it would be an important place for geology and Paleontology researches besides its tourist attraction.

Toptopan Spring of Azerbaijan

This spring is located 5 kilometers far from Azarshahr, near Maraqeh- Tabriz Road. The water pours in a natural basin. It is categorized as bicarbonate and manganese carbonated and ironed water which balancing high red blood cells and hemoglobin levels, improving digestive system function and help to grow.

Varjavi Spring of Maraqeh

Varjavi Spring

This mineral spring is located 8km far from south of Maraqeh. The water of the spring pours in a basin and then enters the nearby river. The spring is between limestone rocks near the river and its water leaps out with gas. The water leaping of the spring is about two liter in a second and is categorized as bicarbonate and manganese carbonated water. The water is limpid but tastes nippy. Its temperature is 19 Celsius and its height is 1360 meter.

Goshayesh village is located 14 km far from southeast of Maraqeh, 700 meters far from southwest of where mineral springs are located. There is an east-west valley that Mordi River running. There are two mineral spring in this valley one of them leaps from limestone rocks in the south of the valley, the other leaps from a hole in a limestone rock in the north of the valley concisely. Although the pressure and amount of water got lower after each leap, the leap repeated and repeated again. It is in calcium bicarbonate and manganese carbonated water categories. Its temperature is 25Celsius and its taste is somehow nippy and its height is 1470 meter.

Hampoeil Cave of Maraqeh

Hampoeil Cave of Maraqeh

Hampoeil or Kabootar Cave is located in a foothill 15 km far from southeast of Maraqeh. It is 1600 meter higher from Mordichay River. The cave entrance width is about 8 meter and its height is 25 to 40 meters. The length and width of the cave’s first square are about 40 and 60 respectively. There is an inscription at the beginning of the cave which is written in Russia and belonged to 1925.
The importance of this cave is because of its deep and horrible holes which are like a big rocky furnace and huge hallways. This cave is much more interesting for mountaineers, researchers, speleologists who come each year to visit.
By entering the cave there would be a big area which has two big holes in its ceiling. There is a tight hallway in the northeast of the first square which is the entry of cave’s second square. There are four ways in the second square, two of them ended in the first square, one of them ended in the cave and the other is a tight hallway ended in another place in the southeast of the cave.
There are four deep holes in the north and northeast of the second square. The cave had been changed each year. The most significant change in the first and second square is a pile of ashes which rise to visitor’s ankle or knee sometimes. There are two aquifers in different holes of the cave, one of them had been destroyed because of wall downfalls but the other one has water and its sound is heard from above. Calcic sediments and stalactites made an interesting view around walls, holes and ceiling’s second square. The weather of the cave is so moist but near the end of the cave in third and fourth holes, there is not enough oxygen. Reaching the cave’s holes is not possible without suitable equipment like light, rope, protective equipment, portable oxygen cylinder, and map. This cave is not managed or exploited now.
