Economic and social situations in Azerbaijan
In 1385 Azerbaijan population was about 3603456 people which are 5.11 percent of Iran population. The average family member in this year was 3, 95. The population growth in 1375-1385 was 0.18 percent.
1839341 people of the entire population were male and 1764115 people were female which its relation was 104 in the district. 23, 07 percent of the entire population were below 15 years old and 70, 60 percent were 15 to 64 year old. 6, 32 percent were 65 years old upward.
The population density was 79 people in each square kilometer in the whole district, in compare, it was 43 people in each square kilometer in the whole country.

According to census records in 1385, the city population was about 2402539 people. This number was 66.67 percent of entire province population. Villages population was 1200820 in 1385 census records which were 33, 32 percent of the entire district population.
In 1385, 3289703 people of the population were six years or older and 81, 56 percent were literate. Literacy ratio in cities was 85, 51 and in rural districts 73, 54 percent.
It should be mentioned that this province agricultural and commercial exploitation and its industrial projects are considered important factors for the economic and financial situation of East Azerbaijan. The input/output ratio scale of Province population reaches high levels.
Economic activities of different cities, besides their industrial development, indicate services boom in compare with other districts. In rural districts, agricultural activities are very important and services boom got the next position. Overall, agricultural and industrial boom constitute the Province most economic aspects.
According to 1385 census, 20, 53 percent of 1155221 working men and women) from 10-year-old upward) are employed in services companies.
East Azerbaijan is considered as one of the most important industrial bases of Iran. Automotive and Tractor Manufacturing industry also make the province as one of the prominent sectors in the industry.
The province other important factories and companies are; Pumpiran, Lifter, Motogen, Diesel Haksyran, Lynand Diesel, Bearing, Piston, Derman Diesel, Aydem Diesel, Termo plus, Match, Towel, Neopan, pasteurized milk, soft drink, Laico Knitting, Sahand Triko, Tabriz Weaving, Pashmineh Spinning, Palaz Carpet, Plaster, leather manufacturing, Sofian Cement, Tabriz Thermal Power, Tabriz Refinery and Petrochemistry.
Tabriz Refinery purifies Ahvaz Petroleum for East and West Azerbaijan, Kordestan, Hamedan and Zanjan’s usage.
East Azerbaijan is considered as the center of Handicraft industry. Carpet weaving is one of its important handicraft industry sectors. This sector had been done through workshops in cities and through crocheting in villages. Other handicraft of the province are; Kilim, Vernis leather pottery, silk, and woolen textile, Suzani, silversmithing, footwear, and basket weaving and silk textile production.
Besides big industries, workshops and handicraft industries which are so important for the economic and social boom of Azerbaijan, it has different kinds of mines such as; gravel, decorative rocks, salt, fire clay, coal, and diatomite mines.
The weather, soil, and water of province make suitable situation to farm.
Some goods have been produced which some of them has been exported to foreign countries. Here are some of them; wheat, barley, rice, vegetables, farm products, onions, potatoes, legume, dried fruits and etc.
The special and natural environment of the Province, the existence of green pastures, gardens, and plains make this area suitable for beekeeping and animal husbandry. Animal husbandry of Nomades also doubled the economic and animal breeding importance of the Province.
Beside traditional animal husbandry, semi-industrial animal husbandry is also conducted which has been built outside the cities contains foreign animals and is considered one of the great centers of milk producing. Animal husbandry has been performed in three ways; industrial, semi-industrial and traditional.

Urmia Lake

Urmia Lake

Urmia Lake is considered as the biggest and the most important permanent lake of Iran. It is located in the northwest of Iran Plateau and west of East Azerbaijan. It extended from north to south and divided Azerbaijan into two west and east parts.
It is one of the worlds rare lakes which contains salt. It has a special size, depth, chemical ingredients, ecology and water cycle. It is registered in international heritage lists of Iran due to its biological features.
There are some ports in Urmia landform to transfer people and cargo. Here are some of the important ones;
Sharafkhane Port
Sharafkhane is Urmia Lake’s biggest port which is located in Shabestar County. Tabriz-Jolfa railway which is divided from Sufian extended to Sharafkhane. There are some important port facilities and storerooms in this port. It is located in the northeast of Urmia Lake, 49km far from Sofian, 20 km far from west of Shabestar and 88 km far from northwest of Tabriz. The port position in the north of the lake is important economically and financially. In the summertime, so many people use its water and sludge for healing their diseases.
Aq Gonbad port
This port is located in Shahi Island and is one of the most important ports due to its commercial and economic activities. Aq Gonbad Port connects seven villages; Aq Gonbad, Saray, Qabchaq, Teimoorloo, Gamichi, Buracharlo and Bahram Abad with Urmia City.
Aq Gonbad port is located in the west part of Shahi Island and east part of Urmia Lake. Ships of Sharafkhane and Golmankhane has stopped many times in this Port and continue its way after transferring cargo and passenger.
Rahmanlo Port
Rahmanlo Port and Village are located in Dizaj of Ajabshir and east part of Urmia Lake. It is one of the important Urmia ports in Urmia Lake of Azerbaijan.
There is a wharf in the north part of this port for people who came for its sludge and water remedial purposes.
In addition to what has been mentioned, Denalo, Qobadlo, Zinatlo are also some of the most important ports in the east of Urmia which are 25 km far from Ajabshir. People use their water and sludge for treatment and remedial purposes.

Quri Gol River of Tabriz

Quri Gol River of Tabriz

Quri Gol wetland is located 45km far from south of Tabriz and 17 km far from northwest of Boston Abad in Tehran-Tabriz Road. The triangle-shaped river area is 240 Hectare and is surrounded by top downhills. It is a good living place for migrant birds and due to its low distance from cities, considered one of the best places to visit. People usually enjoy their free time on holidays wandering in green lands aside the lake. Quri Gol is registered as an international wetland due to its natural features.

East Azerbaijan Wetlands

Azerbaijan has lots of big and small wetlands which are mostly concentrated in Maraqeh and Hashtrud. Here are some of them;
Alma Goli Wetland
This wetland is located in southeast heights (2400 meter) of Sahand Mount, located in the southwest of Abad. Its area is about 20 Hectare and full of canebrake Aquatic Plants. it is living place of so many birds like Mallards and Coots. These natural features enhance wetland’s tourist attractions.
Qobadlo Wetland
This wetland is located 22 km far from northwest of Ajabshir, further than Rahmanlo Port. It attracts some kind of birds from Urmia Lake.
Yaniq Goli Wetland
It is located 31 km far from southwest of Hashtrud. Wild birds migrate there in fall and winter.
Bezujaq Goli Wetland
This wetland is located 31km far from west of Hashtrud. It is the living place of many migrant birds.
Qushagoli Wetland
This canebrake wetland is located 31 km far from west of Hashtrud.
Zu ol Bin Goli Wetland
This seasonal wetland is located 42km far from west of Hahtrud and it is a good shelter for migrant birds because of its canebrakes.
Yusuflo Wetland
This wetland is located 33km far from east of Ahar. It is living place of so many migrant birds.
Dipsiz Wetland
This wetland is located 25 km far from east of Ahar. Its canebrakes make a good situation for migrants birds.
Khormalo Wetland
This permanent wetland is located 42km far from southwest of Ahar. It is living place of migrant birds and used for agricultural purposes.
Moreover, East Azerbaijan has other wetlands which are not going to be mentioned here.

East Azerbaijan Dams

East Azerbaijan Dams

East Azerbaijan has embankment dams for controlling a flow of water which make a good situation for migrant birds. It adds credit to Biologic aspects of the district. Here are some of these dams;
Molla Yaqub Embankment Dam
This dam is located 19 km far from southeast of Sarab and its height is about 1700 meter. It is the living place of different kinds of ducks.
Khorram Daraq Embankment Dam
This dam is located 7km far from Aqaj Valley in Hashtrud. Its height is 1850 meter. This dam is living place of coots, Eurasian Teal, Northern pintail, Common shelduck, Grebe, Sandpiper, Ivory gulls and other kinds of birds.
Minaq Embankment Dam
It is located in the northwest of Haris. Its height is about 1600meter. It is living place of different kinds of ducks.
Alavian Embankment Dam
This dam is located 3, 5 km far from north of Maraqeh in a high area near Maraqeh and green Alavian Valley. It has the capacity of resort exploitation.
Sahand Mount is one of its eye-catching scenery. From May till the end of fall is the best time to visit such a lovely place.
Other Dams
Nahand, Satarkhan, Aido Qamoosh, and Kandovan are the other dams of East Azerbaijan.

Aras River of Azerbaijan

Aras River of Azerbaijan

Aras is called Araz in Azeri language. It carries a large volume of water and is one of the most important rivers of northern Azerbaijan. Its length is 1072 km which is the common border of Iran and other northern countries. This river originated from Min Gul Daq Mountains in turkey and also joins Caspian Sea. Actually, it is fulfilled from two distinct rivers in Armenia, turkey and Ararat Mount which join together in Zanganeh in the northwest of Iran. This district is the common border of Iran, Azerbaijan Republic, and Turkey. Aras River is also the common border of Iran, Azerbaijan, and Armenia. It is highly recommended to visit its riverine.

Aji Chay River of Tabriz

Ajichay River of Azerbaijan Tabriz

Aji River or Aji Chay or Talkhe River is located 10 km far from north of Tabriz in Eynali valley. Its area is about 8547 square kilometer.
Aji Chay is the most important river in Tabriz. Tabriz contains seven rivers in its northern plains; Daryan, Shabestar, Sis, Sufian, Sinasakh, Gonbat, and Baba Baqi. Gonbat and Baba Baqi join Aji chay and the rest joins Urmia Lake.

Osko Chay River of Azerbaijan

Osku River or Osku Chay originated from north of Soltan Daqi mountains, located at west of Shand Mountain. Kandovan River, located at west heights of Sahand Mount, also joins this river.
Soltan Daqi in Daresi and Choopan Bolaqi in Ansarud valley with its east-west path make Astarachay River. Ansarud, Amqan, Esfenaj, Faesqandis, and other historical villages of Kandovan and Kohanmo are in the river’s path.
Osku valley or Chaypare is full of green gardens, pastures and one of the great agricultural centers of Tabriz, because of this river. Near Osku Chay are some other villages like Milan, Bavil Olia, Bavil Sofla, Kale Jade, Dizej and Bayram.

Ahar Chay River

Ahar Chay River originated from Pir Saqqa heights. It runs to east in the southern part of Ahar. Passing Ozmodel district, which is located near Ahar and Lor lands in Vargahan, this river joins Qaresoo, which runs to south from Meshginshahr. This 240km river passes Garmaduz, Vargahan, and Yaft and after watering different lands joins Aras River in Aslanduz.

Tufarqan Chay River in Azerbaijan

 

Tufarqan River or Tufarqan Chay originated from western part of Sahand Mountains (from 3000meter heights), different springs of Hargalan and Ganbar heights. Watering near villages, it passes south of Azarshah.
Tufarqan River joins Urmia Lake after passing Azarshahr, Gugan and Teimoorloo village. Its length is about 56 km and its path is from east to west. An old and two new bridges have been built on this river in Tabriz-Maraqeh Road.
